Summary[]

When Alex falls ill and has to stay home from school, he discovers that not only is he not alone in the house, but that the government has put the house under quarantine and may have to kill him to keep his illness from infecting the neighborhood.

Plot[]

Alex is suffering from a really bad fever and has to stay home from school. When his mom goes out to buy some more medicine, he decides to goof around and do everything a kid would love to do when they're home alone. Alex falls asleep while watching TV and snacking on junk food. When he wakes up, he feels even worse than before. Deciding to lie back down, Alex heads up to his room, but he begins to hear strange noises and his vision blurs and distorts in front of him. After a few more weird experiences (such as warm, wet walls and the TV turning on by itself), he tries to head outside to get some fresh air, but finds the door blocked by plastic wrapping.

Panicked, he tries to escape but finds people in biohazard suits wrapping the house in plastic. Alex overhears one of them talking on the phone, mentioning the word "quarantine." Suddenly, Alex is attacked by a tentacled creature that seems to come out of the walls, keeping pace with Alex no matter where he runs.

Alex tries to lock himself in his room, but as he is attempting to barricade his door, the TV switches on again. The newscasters begin talking to Alex, telling him in urgent voices between the normal morning show babble that he has to go back downstairs to keep the monster from infecting the whole house. Alex finds out from one of the newscasters that his house is being is under governmental quarantine because of the alien, not because of his sickness. The people outside are preparing to exterminate the monster, and Alex will be collateral damage. With guidance from the newscaster, Alex decides to gear up and fight the alien himself to keep the agents from filling his house with poison gas. Alex begins to battle the monster, slicing off its tentacles; as he struggles on the ground with the alien, the quarantine agents break a window and start to pump poison gas into the house.

In the middle of the struggle, Alex wakes up and finds his mother trying to calm him, lightly scolding him for not staying in bed. Where before he was fighting off the tentacles of the monster, he is now wrapped in the limp tube from the vacuum cleaner. Alex tries to explain what happened and tell her that she's in danger, but his mom assures him that he was only having a fever dream. The "government agents" were actually painters come to work on the house, the slime oozing down the walls was just Alex leaving phlegm around from sneezing, and the noises he heard were a maid who'd come over to clean. Alex is relieved that the whole thing was just a dream -- until the morning news hosts come back on TV and warn him that it's not over. As hazard alarms begin to blare, Alex mutters that he's still hallucinating. The TV hosts urgently try to get him to believe that his mom is the fever dream rather than them, and the episode ends with everything engulfed in a blinding, white light.

Trivia[]

  • If you look closely, you can see Alex watching Dan Vs, another show on The Hub. Showrunner Dan Angel was also a producer on that show.
  • The state of the whole house may or may not be symbolic of the 'alien virus' affecting Alex's healthy body. Notice the green sticky mucus covering both the walls and table after he tries to leave the house.
  • The alien resembles a pink fleshy blob wth two thick tentacles. It looks like a virus or maybe even a parasite. It might even be Alex's virus itself.
  • If you look closely in the opening scene, there is a comic book with a creature that looks like the monster on the cover.
  • The actress who plays Alex's mom, Julia Benson, and the actor who plays the male newscaster, Peter Benson, are married.
